Ava L. Jenkins

Ava is a two-time AUDELCO Award winning actor, who began performing onstage at a young age in ensembles for such productions as Annie, Grease and Tom Sawyer.  She is a native of Baltimore, Maryland, and was a part of the Arena Players and a local Drama club in Baltimore, where her love for performing grew.

While in Baltimore, Ava sang in a gospel trio called The Fruit of the Spirit for several years, until her move to New York City in 1993.  Her smooth, sultry, low-pitched vocal style was recognized, and nurtured into a beautiful contralto.  Though her natural vocal range is low, it is not limited as Ava can belt out, in full voice, a pure alto range as well.

Since residing in New York City, Ava has been able to perform in many productions on various stages, and has also performed on tour through the National Black Touring Circuit.  Some of her theater credits include Accept 'Except' LGBT NY, Home in Her Heart, Stealin' Home, Sally and Tom (The American Way), Playing with Heiner Muller, The Task, Demostration 2013, I Lost My Heart in Haiti, Mom You're The Best, and The Donut Play.  She has performed with the comedy improv group, The Proverbial Loons, served as the vocal coach, and was a co-teacher for an Acting for Everyone class.

Ava also sang at Lincoln Center for a theater Gala, performed in many staged readings, films, TV, and was a fitness model in Self Magazine. Being an avid writer, she has also self-published two books, and wrote her first stage play in 2012 entitled Forbidden Fruit, which was presented as a staged reading at the 2017 National Black Theater Festival.  She is also the Founder and CEO of Towdah Unlimited Productions, LLC.
